Diplomatic Reset: India and Canada to Appoint New High Commissioners After Strained Ties

In a major diplomatic breakthrough, India and Canada have agreed to appoint new High Commissioners in each other’s countries, signaling a move toward restoring normalcy in bilateral relations. This decision was reached following a significant meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian representative Mark Carney during the G7 Summit. The move comes after months of political tension, largely stemming from actions and statements made during Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s tenure, which strained relations between the two democracies. Trudeau’s stance on certain sensitive issues had led both nations to withdraw their respective envoys, creating a diplomatic void. Now, with Carney taking a more conciliatory approach, both countries have not only agreed to reinstate High Commissioners but also revive key dialogues at ministerial and senior official levels. The discussions also included plans to restart negotiations on the Early Progress Trade Agreement (EPTA) and move forward with the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).This renewed cooperation indicates a mutual desire to mend ties and resume economic and political engagement. The agreement paves the way for enhanced strategic and trade collaboration, promising a new chapter in India-Canada relations.
