Bengaluru Police Issue Notice To Pro-Kannada Group Over ‘Thug Life’ Release Amid SC Concerns

Bengaluru Police issued a formal notice to pro-Kannada organisation, Karnataka Rakshna Vedike (KRV), warning against staging any protests outside designated areas over the release of the Tamil film 'Thug Life' in Karnataka on Wednesday. The move comes after Karnataka High Court cleared the film, starring Kamal Haasan and directed by Mani Ratnam, for screening across the state.

Thug Life Release In Karnataka: Notice Issued For Pro-Kannada Orgs

The notice, which has been pasted at the residence of pro-Kannada activist Praveen Shetty, cites the High Court's directive allowing the film’s release and instruction that any demonstrations or dharnas must be held strictly at Freedom Park, the designated protest zone in the city. Authorities have cautioned that any violation of this order, such as protests in other public spaces will invite strict legal action.

The development follows a significant observation by the Supreme Court on Tuesday, where a bench comprising Justice Ujjal Bhuyan and Justice Manmohan expressed serious concern over the "extra-judicial ban" on Thug Life in Karnataka. The film’s release had been stalled after certain pro-Kannada groups raised objections, following remarks by Kamal Haasan suggesting that the Kannada language originated from Tamil, statement that triggered widespread backlash.

While hearing a Public Interest Litigation filed by one Mahesh Reddy seeking directions to ensure the film’s screening in Karnataka, the Supreme Court questioned the state's handling of the matter.

Justice Bhuyan, speaking for the bench, stated: "We cannot allow mobs and vigilante groups to take over the streets. The rule of law must prevail. If someone makes a statement, respond with a counter statement, not by suppressing a film release. This is proxy censorship."

The apex court's strong remarks have put the spotlight back on freedom of expression and the responsibility of state machinery to uphold constitutional rights against coercion by interest groups.

"Thug Life" is scheduled to release across Karnataka on June 18 following the court's orders. Police presence has been stepped up in several locations to prevent any potential disruptions.
