Monsoon Hits UP And Rajasthan Bringing Relief From Heat, But IMD Warns Of Heavy Rain, Lightning
The Southwest Monsoon has officially advanced into southern parts of Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, offering much-needed relief from searing summer heat. However, weather authorities have warned of intense rain, thunderstorms, and lightning in the coming days.
Delayed Monsoon Reaches Eastern UP
In Uttar Pradesh, the monsoon arrived five days later than its usual onset date of June 13, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed. Light to moderate showers were recorded in districts such as Sonbhadra, Ballia, Mau, and Ghazipur. The IMD expects favourable conditions for the monsoon to progress further into the state within the next two to three days.
A well-marked low-pressure area near Gangetic West Bengal is forecast to move west-northwest, potentially increasing rainfall from June 19 onward. IMD scientist Atul Kumar Singh said widespread thunderstorms, lightning, and isolated incidents of very heavy rain are expected across many parts of the state until June 22.
After days of extreme heat with maximum temperatures above 40°C, the recent rainfall brought welcome respite. However, the Uttar Pradesh government has urged residents to exercise caution, warning of a potential rise in lightning-related incidents. The IMD has also flagged the risk of damage to kutcha houses, huts, and fragile structures, advising local administrations to remain vigilant.
Rajasthan Welcomes Early Monsoon
In a reversal of UP’s delayed arrival, Rajasthan experienced an early onset of the monsoon—about a week ahead of schedule. Rainfall entered from the southern and southeastern regions, bringing moderate to heavy showers to several eastern districts.
According to Radheyshyam Sharma, Director of the Jaipur Met Centre, Kaman in Bharatpur recorded the highest rainfall at 101 mm in the last 24 hours. A low-pressure system over central Rajasthan is expected to sustain the monsoon activity, with more moderate to heavy rain predicted in the eastern belt over the next 48 hours.
Monsoon to Expand Further by Month-End
The monsoon is projected to continue expanding across the northern Arabian Sea, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and Bihar by the end of June. Authorities in both UP and Rajasthan are gearing up for intensified weather activity, urging residents to stay updated on forecasts and follow safety advisories.
