In-plant railway siding at Manesar to increase vehicle transportation
Haryana has achieved a historic milestone in the field of logistics and industrial infrastructure as the country’s largest automobile Gati Shakti Multi-Modal Cargo Terminal (in-plant railway siding) has been inaugurated at Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL), Manesar, Gurugram.
What is in-plant railway siding?
The facility allows the manufacturer to ship its products through railways from its manufacturing unit itself. It eliminates the need to ship finished product to railway terminals for further transportation. The newly opened terminal would not only transport vehicles manufactured at the Manesar and Gurugram plants to 17 hubs and 380 cities across India, but also export vehicles to ports such as Pipavav and Mundra — thereby directly integrating Haryana into the global supply chain.
What are detailed specifications of the project?
The Manesar railway siding, registered under the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, has been developed as part of the 126 km Haryana Orbital Rail Corridor (HORC) running from Sonepat to Palwal in the state. Spread over 46 acres inside the MSIL Manesar facility, the railway siding features a fully electrified corridor having four full length tracks for rakes and one track for engine escape, totalling to 8.2 km of track length. The siding also includes a two-floor station building, dedicated pathway for guards and drivers along tracks, advanced electronic train interlocking and more. Models manufactured at MSIL’s Gurugram and Manesar facilities will be dispatched to 17 hubs from this railway siding serving 380 cities across India. Port locations of Mundra and Pipavav, used by the company for exports, will also be served. The railway siding will have a dispatch capability of 450,000 vehicles at full capacity.
What is the environmental impact of the project?
The company’s second in-plant railway siding facility is considered as a landmark achievement in its green logistics journey. The project underscores MSIL’s strong commitment to India’s net zero emissions target 2070. It will help in avoiding 175,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions, saving 60 million litre of fuel annually at full capacity, and reducing road congestion. The MSIL claims that lowering carbon emissions remains a top priority of the auto major. The company aims to achieve this by increasing share of vehicle dispatches through the Railways to 35 per cent by the 2030-31 fiscal.
Under which firm is this project being executed?
A 126 km HORC connects Sonepat to Palwal via Kharkhoda, Patli, Manesar and Sohna. The project is being executed by a joint venture company called Haryana Orbital Rail Corporation Limited (HORCL). The joint venture is a collaboration between Haryana Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (HRIDC), Haryana State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (HSIIDC), Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA), Allcargo Logistics and Maruti Suzuki. The HRIDC will be constructing the entire 126 km Haryana Orbital Rail Corridor over the next five to six years. The total project cost is estimated at Rs 117,091 million (1,17,09 crore).
What is equity contribution under the joint venture?
The equity contribution under the joint venture for the HRIDC is 55.4 per cent, HSIIDC19 per cent, Maruti Suzuki 13 per cent, All Cargo Logistics 7.6 per cent and GMDA 5 per cent. In the first phase of HORC, a 5.7 km track connecting Patli, a junction on the existing rail line to Manesar station has been constructed. An additional 1.2 km track has been constructed connecting Manesar station to MSIL as part of the project.
