Youth hangs self in police custody at Raipur Rani
A 24-year-old man, Abhishek, a resident of Hangola village, allegedly died by suicide while in police custody at the Raipur Rani Police Station on Wednesday evening. The incident has prompted a judicial inquiry under the supervision of the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Panchkula, as the case is classified as a custodial death.
According to police sources, Abhishek was caught red-handed stealing from a local temple by the village Sarpanch and other residents. He was taken to the police station along with the recovered stolen items. A written complaint was submitted, and a First Information Report (FIR) was registered against him under Sections 305 and 331(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Soon after his arrival at the station, Abhishek reportedly hanged himself in one of the rooms of the police premises. He was immediately rushed to the Civil Hospital in Sector 6, Panchkula, where doctors declared him brought dead.
Police confirmed that Abhishek had two prior theft cases already registered against him. In light of the custodial nature of his death, a judicial inquiry is now underway and the investigation is being closely monitored.
Authorities have assured that if any police personnel or other individuals are found to be responsible, strict legal action will be taken in accordance with the law. Officials have extended their condolences to the bereaved family and reiterated their commitment to a fair, impartial and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.
