Probe assault on elderly woman in Nakodar: Women panel to admn

The Punjab State Women Commission has taken immediate and strong action after a disturbing video showing an elderly woman being assaulted in Nakodar surfaced on social media. The video, which quickly went viral, has prompted the commission to step in and demand an inquiry from the district administration.

The incident, which occurred in Raipur Gujran village, shows a man and a woman — identified as Gurjeet Singh and an unnamed woman — brutally beating up a senior citizen. The footage sparked outrage across social media platforms, leading to widespread calls for justice.

Acting under Section 12 of the Punjab State Women Commission Act, 2001, Commission Chairperson Raj Lali Gill took suo motu cognizance of the incident and issued firm instructions to the local administration. She directed that an immediate investigation by a senior officer be launched and that a detailed report be submitted to the commission no later than June 19.

“The commission is deeply concerned by the inhuman treatment meted out to the elderly woman,” said Gill. “We will ensure that strict action is taken. There is zero tolerance for violence against women, especially the elderly, who deserve our utmost respect and protection.”

The video was posted by user Rajvinder Singh, who identified the accused as Gurjeet Singh from the same village. In the video, the elderly woman can be seen being pinned to the ground and mercilessly beaten up by the duo, with no intervention from bystanders. The graphic nature of the footage shocked viewers and immediately drew the attention of the state authorities.

The commission’s rapid intervention has now placed the spotlight on the local administration and police, which have been tasked with conducting a time-bound and impartial investigation. Chairperson Gill also indicated that further legal steps will be taken once the report is received.

Social media users and women’s rights activists have praised the commission’s swift and assertive response, calling it a vital move toward ensuring accountability and justice in crimes against vulnerable women.

This incident is a stark reminder of the violence that elderly women continue to face and the critical role that institutions like the Women Commission play in ensuring such acts are addressed with the seriousness they deserve. The commission has assured the public that it will closely monitor the progress of the case and take further action as necessary to secure justice for the victim.
