SC orders Karnataka to ensure security for ‘Thug Life’ screening in the state

In recent developments regarding the theatrical release of Mani Ratnam directorial Thug Life in Karnataka, the Supreme Court has directed the state government to take action against those obstructing the screening.
On Thursday, a bench of Justices Ujjal Bhuyan and Manmohan noted the state government's assurance that it would provide adequate security in theatres when the Kamal Haasan-starrer would be screened.

According to the Deccan Herald, the Karnataka government filed an affidavit on Wednesday, stating that necessary steps would be taken if the film was to be released. "In the event, that the producers of the film decide to release the movie in the State of Karnataka, the state government is duty bound and will give protection and security for such release and for the people connected therewith, including the cast, director, producers, the exhibitors, and the audience," the affidavit stated.
On Tuesday, the apex court came down heavily on the Karnataka government after the actor's movie was not screened in theatres in the state despite having received appropriate certification from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
Following this, the Supreme Court instructed the Karnataka government to permit the screening of the Thug Life in the state on Wednesday. Despite the order, Thug Life film distributor sees no benefit in releasing the film in the state due to the two-week delay and disappointing box-office performance of the action-drama.

The plea against the ban was filed by M Mahesh Reddy, who claimed that the Karnataka authorities prevented Thug Life’s theatrical release through oral instructions and police interference. The Supreme Court closed the Public Interest Litigation (PIL) after the state government's assurance, observing no further guidelines or directions were necessary.
