Israel-Iran war: Apart from its geopolitical consequences, the Israel-Iran war is also expected to significantly impact the global economy, with some of the ill-effects already visible in countries like India, which has trade ties with both Iran and Israel. According to reports, the prices of dry fruits in Indian markets have increased five to ten times than normal as the Iran-Israel war entered its seventh day on Thursday.
Dry fruit prices skyrocket due to Israel-Iran war
India imports dry fruits like dates, Mamra almonds, pistachios etc. from Iran, but prices of these items have skyrocketed as supplies have halted due to the ongoing Iran-Israel conflict. As per reports, the prices of dry fruits have increased by five to ten times in the wholesale markets of Delhi.
Delhi Grocery Committee General Secretary Dheeraj V. Sindhwani said the supply of dry fruits from Iran has reduced significantly, and prices may increase in coming months due to shortage of supplies.
Earlier, India imported dry fruits such as raisins, walnuts, almonds, figs, and apricots from Afghanistan via Pakistan, but that came to end when India cut ties with Pakistan after the barbaric Pahalgam terror attack that led to the recent India-Pakistan conflict in May. Now, Afghanistan exports dry fruits to India via Iran’s Chabahar Port, but that has also been halted temporarily in wake of the raging Israel-Iran war.
As per official data, a major portion of dry fruits imports from Iran were transported to India via Dubai. Iranian dry fruits were first exported to Afghanistan, and from there sent to other countries, including India via Dubai.
Notably, Dubai is a major trading hub for India, and there are scores of warehouses in the city where dry fruits are exported from countries like Iran and Afghanistan, and later re-exported to India.
India-Iran trade relations
India has strong trade ties with Iran, with goods worth $130 million exported to the Islamic Republic, and $43 worth of goods imported in March 2025. India-Iran trade has witnessed a 47.1 percent increase in FY25 compared to FY24, with Indian exports surging from $41.5 million to $88.1 million.
However, imports from Iran have decreased by 23.6 percent from $56.2 million to $13.3 million, as per officials.
India could face crude oil crisis
Meanwhile, the Iran-Israel war also threatens to cause a significant rise in oil prices in India as the New Delhi exports nearly 80 percent of its crude oil needs from countries like Kuwait, Qatar, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, which could come under threat in the coming days if oil shipping lanes are blocked in the Middle East.
Apart from oil and dry fruits, India also imports products like salt, Sulphur, clay, stone, plaster, lime and cement, mineral fuels, plastic and its products, iron and steel, organic chemicals, gum, resin and lacquer from Iran.
