The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has approved the Delhi government’s artificial rain project. The project will focus on nimbostratus clouds with more than 50% moisture. The Environment Minister said that preparations are complete and this is the roadmap for the future. The IIT Kanpur team will use silver iodide. Air quality will be monitored and flights will stay away from safe areas.

Artificial rain: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has approved the Delhi government’s pilot project of artificial rain. It has also confirmed the possibility of artificial rain in the National Capital Region. In this experiment, mainly nimbostratus clouds will be selected which are at an altitude of 500 to 6000 meters. These should have at least 50 percent humidity.

Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said, preparations are complete, now we are just waiting for the clouds. As soon as the weather is favorable, Delhi will see the project of artificial rain for the first time. This is not just an experiment, but a roadmap for the future. That too based on science, driven by accuracy and with data-driven monitoring.

Highlights of the pilot project

  • The weather department will provide information such as cloud cover, height, humidity and wind direction on the actual tile
  • The IIT Kanpur team will use a special mixture of silver iodide, iodised salt and rock salt on the aircraft through a flare-based system
  • A total of five flights are planned, with each flight to operate for one to 1.5 hours over an area of at least 100 square kilometres
  • The flights will stay away from highly secured areas (such as Rashtrapati Bhavan, Prime Minister’s residence, Parliament House and other special places)
  • The impact on air quality will be analysed through monitoring stations
