Fearing She’d Run Away, Groom Locks Up Bride In Ujjain, Calls Cops
Ujjain (Madhya Pradesh): A strange case of a newly-wed man having to lock up his bride, and then call the police on her just two days after their wedding has surfaced here.
The man, Sanjay Bairagi of Bichhrod village, has alleged that the family of the bride, Bhavna Mhatre of Indore, made him pay Rs 1.91 lakh for the wedding. He claimed that she kept her distance for two days and was planning to escape.
He alleged that on Thursday, two women from Indore visited them, planning to escort Bhavna from there, which is when he locked her in a room and called the police.
He said the women even claimed to be relatives of Indore MLA Golu Shukla, and threatened them using the lawmaker’s name. A video, purportedly of this incident, also surfaced on social media. The police have taken Bhavna and her alleged relatives into custody. The case is being investigated.
The complainant, 35-year-old Sanjay, said his meeting with Bhavna, who lives in Laxmanpura, Indore, was arranged by his maternal uncle. He said both he and Bhavna agreed to get married. As soon as the wedding was fixed, Bhavna’s family allegedly asked Sanjay to send Rs 11,000 online to facilitate their visit in a car. On June 16, Bhavna visited Sanjay in his village.
On the wedding day, Sanjay alleged, he was made to cough up Rs 1.8 lakh in cash. He has video proof of the exchange. An affidavit was made, dated six months ago. The marriage was then solemnised in a village temple.
For two days, Bhavna avoided Sanjay, making some excuse or another. The family then got suspicious and started keeping an eye on her. On Wednesday evening, Bhavna allegedly called up a woman, asking her to take her from there as she felt suffocated. The family was then convinced that the bride was preparing to run away.
The next morning, two women arrived from Indore, ready to take Bhavna away. The family then informed the Ghattiya police. SP Pradeep Sharma said that it had come to light that money was taken in the name of the wedding. He said Bhavna and the other two women were being questioned. Documents and videos were being examined. Further action will be taken based on the preliminary investigation, he said.
