Bus overturns on Delhi-Jaipur highway; cop dead, 20 injured
A Delhi Police Head Constable died, while more than 20 passengers were injured, after a Rajasthan Transport Corporation bus travelling from Delhi to Jaipur lost control and overturned while attempting to avoid a WagonR car near Pachgaon Chowk on the Delhi-Jaipur Highway on Saturday morning. Both the car and the bus were badly damaged and were removed from the highway with the help of a crane.
All the injured were admitted to different hospitals. The condition of the bus conductor and a child passenger is reported to be critical, and both have been admitted to a private hospital. The deceased Head Constable of Delhi Police was identified as Ashok Kumar (39), a resident of Molawas village in Alwar district, Rajasthan.
According to the police, the accident occurred around 9.30 am on Saturday when a Rajasthan Transport Corporation bus, full of passengers, was en route from Delhi to Jaipur. As the bus approached Pachgaon Chowk, a WagonR car from Bilaspur began merging onto the Delhi-Jaipur highway. It is alleged that the car driver attempted to cross ahead of the bus but failed to clear the path. On spotting the car suddenly entering the highway, the bus driver tried to swerve to avoid it, but lost control of the vehicle. The bus veered about 50 metres before overturning.
As the bus overturned, passengers began screaming. Vehicles on the highway stopped at the scene and the police were informed. A police team arrived promptly and rescued passengers from the overturned bus, rushing them to nearby hospitals. Using a crane, the police cleared both the bus and the WagonR from the road and restored the flow of traffic.
The brother of the deceased Head Constable Ashok Kumar said that his brother had two children—a son and a daughter. On Saturday, Ashok and his niece were due to travel together from Delhi to Molawas village, but Ashok Kumar had asked his daughter to go home as he was running late for duty. He left alone for the village by bus and tragically died in the accident.
“All the injured are not identified yet, but four people including a 9-year-old girl, Aradhya, Ramkishan, Vishwas and Aastha have been admitted to a private hospital in Bilaspur. There is no information yet about the car riders. We handed over the body of the Head Constable to his family after the post-mortem and a probe is underway,” said ASI Birender Singh, the investigating officer.
