Mob Attacks Police Personnel In Thane After 1 Killed In Road Accident

Thane, Jun 22 (PTI) Angry locals attacked police personnel and their vehicles after one person was killed and two were injured in an accident involving a car and a motobike in Maharashtra's Thane district, officials said on Sunday.

Some of the police personnel, including women, were also injured and their vehicles damaged in the incident which took place on Saturday night, a district rural police official said without specifying the numbers.

As per preliminary information, a car carrying picnickers en-route to Malshej Ghat and a motorbike with three occupants collided at Avlacha Pada in Tokawade, Murbad area, the official said.

After getting news of the accident, several villagers rushed to the spot, apprehended the car occupants and beat them up severely, he said.

The Tokawade police went to the spot upon being alerted and managed to rescue the car occupants, placing them in a police jeep.

However, as the jeep was proceeding to the police station, the angry mob attacked it and other police vehicles, the official said.

The police later brought the situation under control, preventing the car occupants from being beaten to death by the enraged villagers, he said.

Several policemen suffered injuries, including fractures, in the incident and were undergoing treatment in local hospitals, the official said.

Additional police force was sent to the spot to bring the situation under control.

The body of the road accident victim was sent to a government hospital for post-mortem and the injured motorbike riders were admitted to a hospital, the official said.

The Tokawade police have registered two separate First Information Reports (FIRs) - one against the car driver involved in the road accident and another against those involved in attacking the police party and the car occupants, the official said. PTI COR GK
