Harvesting hope: Apple orchard initiative takes root in Kiri village

The apple orchard initiative launched under the Rural Development Department’s schemes has emerged as a promising source of sustainable self-employment for residents of Kiri gram panchayat in the Mehla development block. Effective implementation of various government schemes has enabled local communities to benefit from high-quality apple cultivation, marking a significant step towards rural self-reliance.
District Development Officer Om Prakash Thakur informed that during the financial year 2024–25, around 12,000 high-quality apple saplings were distributed to 100 families in Kheeri Panchayat under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). He further added that the saplings were of new-generation varieties grown on advanced rootstocks such as M-9 and M-11. The key varieties distributed include Red Velox, Dark Baron Gala, Sunico Gala, Jeromine, and King Rot, all known for their market value and productivity.
Before distributing the plants, the department also assisted the beneficiaries in preparing their fields in accordance with agricultural norms and best practices.
Beneficiaries from the village of Lagga, including Hukam Singh, Bablu, Santo Ram, Sher Singh, and Madho Ram said that the initiative has sparked greater interest in intensive apple farming in the surrounding areas.
The farmers said that while residents of the region traditionally grow cash crops like cabbage and peas, many have now started integrating apple cultivation as a complementary venture. The adoption of intensive apple farming has also opened up opportunities for intercropping, allowing farmers to grow vegetables and fruits side-by-side for improved income.
Farmers and orchardists in the area believe that alongside developmental schemes, the provision of long-term self-employment opportunities by the Rural Development Department is playing a vital role in empowering them and promoting self-reliance in the region.
