Absconding man in committee fund fraud case resurfaces

A dramatic twist occurred on Sunday in the city’s committee fund fraud case when Sanjeev Sharma, a man previously reported as absconding, resurfaced and claimed he was being harassed. Sharma, a resident of Baba Gadhiya, Khalwara Gate, Phagwara, was allegedly missing after reports surfaced accusing him of siphoning off crores of rupees through local committee schemes.

Sharma was intercepted earlier today by Sukhwinder Singh Baba, a city resident, who spotted him on the outskirts of the city in a visibly distressed state, holding a piece of paper. Singh, upon approaching Sharma, said the man was in tears and claimed he had been subjected to harassment by several individuals, pushing him to the brink.

The paper Sharma was holding allegedly listed the names of eight individuals he accused of defaming him on social media. Speaking to reporters, Sharma claimed that he had run a committee business with integrity, collecting and returning funds as per schedule. He said he used to recover Rs 40,000–50,000 daily from his clients, but recently, some individuals delayed repayments under false pretences, reducing his daily recovery to just Rs 4,000–5,000.

Sharma further accused certain individuals of intentionally harassing him and spreading misinformation, exaggerating their claims. “Some of them are only owed Rs 1.5 lakh, but they are alleging that I owe them Rs 10 lakh,” he said. Sharma asserted that this misinformation campaign had resulted in severe financial and emotional distress.

After being brought to the police by Sukhwinder Singh, Sharma presented his version of events. City police assured a fair and impartial investigation, stating that the case would be thoroughly examined to ensure justice for both parties involved.

Following Sharma’s disappearance several days ago, a group of affected individuals had filed a formal complaint, leading to the registration of a case under various legal provisions. Authorities confirmed that the investigation is ongoing.
