Mumbai Hosts 2-Day National Conference On Estimates Committees To Mark 75th Anniversary
Mumbai: A two-day national conference of Estimates Committees of Parliament and State/UT Legislative Bodies commenced in Mumbai today to commemorate 75 years of the functioning of the Estimates Committee of Parliament. The event is aimed at enhancing the role of these committees in the effective monitoring and review of Budget Estimates to promote administrative efficiency and fiscal prudence.
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla inaugurated the conference and also released a special souvenir marking the committee's 75-year journey. The theme of the event, “Role of Estimates Committee in Effective Monitoring and Review of Budget Estimates for Ensuring Efficiency and Economy in Administration” will be deliberated upon by key policymakers and committee members over the two days.
The inaugural session saw the presence of several prominent political figures, including Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, Chairman of the Maharashtra Legislative Council Prof. Ram Shankar Shinde and Speaker of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Rahul Narwekar. Dr Sanjay Jaiswal, Chairperson of the Parliamentary Estimates Committee, also addressed the gathering.
According to the Lok Sabha Secretariat, Arjun Panditrao Khotkar, Chairperson of the Estimates Committee of the Maharashtra Legislature, delivered the welcome address, while Dr Neelam Gorhe, Deputy Chairperson of the Maharashtra Legislative Council, proposed the vote of thanks at the inaugural ceremony.
The conference has brought together Chairpersons and members of Estimates Committees from across the country, including representatives from Parliament, various State Assemblies, Union Territory legislatures, and members of the Maharashtra Legislature. The gathering serves as a platform for exchanging insights and best practices in financial oversight.
The concluding day on Tuesday will feature the valedictory address by Maharashtra Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha Harivansh, Parliamentary Estimates Committee Chairperson Dr Sanjay Jaiswal and Leader of Opposition in the Maharashtra Legislative Council Ambadas Danve are also scheduled to speak.
The event will conclude with a vote of thanks by Anna Dadu Bansode, Deputy Speaker of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. The conference is expected to strengthen the parliamentary oversight mechanisms and foster greater accountability in public spending.
