Assembly Bypoll Results 2025 Updates: AAP Gains In Punjab & Gujarat, Congress Leads In Kerala, TMC Dominates Bengal, BJP Strong In Kadi

New Delhi: Counting is underway for assembly bypolls across five key constituencies in Gujarat, Punjab, Kerala, and West Bengal. As of the latest trends, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has taken the lead in both Punjab’s Ludhiana West and Gujarat’s Visavadar, while the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) is ahead in Kerala’s Nilambur. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) continues to maintain a strong lead in Kaliganj, West Bengal. In Gujarat’s Kadi, the BJP has extended its lead to over 16,000 votes.

The bypolls, conducted on June 19, are expected to serve as a political barometer for the BJP and the INDIA bloc ahead of the 2025 Assembly elections in Kerala and West Bengal. They also mark a moment of reckoning for AAP, which has kept a low profile following its defeat in the Delhi Assembly polls.

Gujarat: AAP Ahead in Visavadar, BJP Dominates Kadi

In a turnaround from earlier trends, AAP has now taken the lead in Visavadar with Gopal Italia, a prominent face from the 2015 Patidar agitation, edging ahead. BJP’s Kirit Patel, a former district president, is close behind. The seat was vacated in 2023 after AAP’s Bhupendra Bhayani resigned and joined the BJP. Congress candidate Nitin Ranpariya is trailing in third place.

In Kadi, the BJP is leading comfortably with a margin of over 16,000 votes. The party’s candidate, Rajendra Chavda, is aiming to retain the seat that fell vacant after the death of BJP MLA Karsan Solanki. Congress’s Ramesh Chavda and AAP’s Jagdish Chavda are also in the fray.

Punjab: AAP Holds Lead in Ludhiana West

In Ludhiana West, AAP’s Sanjeev Arora, a former Rajya Sabha MP and industrialist, has maintained his lead. The seat became vacant following the death of sitting MLA Gurpreet Bassi Gogi in January.

The Congress’s Bharat Bhushan Ashu is in second place, followed by BJP’s Jiwan Gupta. AAP’s top leadership, including Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia and Atishi, had actively campaigned in the constituency in a bid to retain its stronghold. The Congress, which has historically won this seat six times since 1977, is hoping for an upset.

Kerala: Congress Leads in Nilambur

The Congress-led UDF is leading in Nilambur, where Aryadan Shoukath, the party’s 2016 candidate, is ahead. The contest carries symbolic significance for the Congress, especially for Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who held a roadshow in the region. The seat falls within her Wayanad constituency.

Nilambur was vacated by Left-backed independent legislator PV Anvar after his fallout with the CPI(M). Anvar later joined the TMC. The LDF has fielded M Swaraj for this crucial contest, while the BJP is represented by Advocate Mohan George.

West Bengal: TMC Strong in Kaliganj

In West Bengal’s Kaliganj constituency, TMC candidate Alifa Ahmed has widened her lead over Congress’s Kabil Uddin Shaaikh. The seat, under Nadia district, was vacated after the death of her father and sitting MLA Nasiruddin Ahmed.

The BJP’s candidate, Ashish Ghosh, is trailing. With a Muslim voter population of over 50 per cent, the rural seat is seen as a key battleground ahead of next year’s Assembly elections. The bypoll is shaping into a high-stakes contest between the TMC and BJP as both parties test their ground ahead of 2025.
