From text to visuals: How to create AI images in WhatsApp chats?

WhatsApp has begun rolling out a powerful new feature in India that brings Meta’s generative AI capabilities directly into chat windows. The update enables users to create AI-generated images on the spot by simply typing a descriptive prompt-marking a significant evolution in how Indians engage with the country’s most widely used messaging app.

Available in both English and Hindi, the feature allows users to type /imagine followed by a prompt, or tag @Meta AI in any conversation with a creative instruction. Within seconds, Meta’s AI responds with an original image generated from the text input - without requiring users to leave the app or open a separate tool. The update is currently rolling out in phases, and users are advised to update to the latest version of WhatsApp if they haven’t seen it yet.

This move is part of Meta’s broader push to integrate generative AI into its core platforms, including Facebook, Instagram and Messenger. WhatsApp’s integration stands out for its seamless in-chat experience and zero paywall access, a contrast to many other image-generation tools in the market.

Meta has confirmed that standard WhatsApp conversations remain end-to-end encrypted, and only specific prompts directed to Meta AI are processed for image creation - ensuring user privacy is not compromised.

India, being one of WhatsApp’s largest global markets, is among the first countries to receive this feature. Its launch underscores Meta’s strategic focus on enhancing user experience in high-engagement regions through accessible AI tools. With this update, WhatsApp is positioning itself not just as a platform for messaging but as a space for visual storytelling, idea generation, and everyday creativity.

As Meta continues to invest heavily in AI capabilities, the company is expected to expand these tools further—potentially introducing AI-generated stickers, wallpapers, and other media enhancements within the app. For now, the “imagine” feature offers users a playful, practical way to bring their ideas to life through visuals, all within the comfort of their regular chat experience.
