In Photos: At Kamakhya Station, Drones Take Over Train Cleaning, Promising Safer Sanitation

In a major step toward tech-driven modernisation, Indian Railways has introduced a drone-powered cleaning system at Kamakhya Railway Station in Assam. Launched in April 2024, this innovative initiative marks a first-of-its-kind use of drones for regular cleaning and sanitation in railway maintenance.

Drones are now scrubbing where humans couldn’t

After success at Kamakhya, the goal is clear: smarter tech, safe for workers, and cleaner stations by using tech across India.

Cleaning train rooftops, platform sheds, and overhead structures used to be tough. Now, drones fitted with high-pressure water jets can sanitise those hard-to-reach areas with ease. It’s not only more effective, but it also protects workers from risky manual tasks.

Better safety for workers, cleaner stations for all

While Indian Railways has used drones before for surveillance and infrastructure checks, this is the first time they’re being deployed for cleaning.

Previously, workers had to climb up dangerous heights or crawl into tight spaces just to clean coaches and platforms. This new drone system significantly reduces these tasks, offering a safer work environment while keeping stations sparkling clean.

The Railways Ministry reports that this drone system has already cut down manual labour, sped up the cleaning process, and significantly improved hygiene standards. It’s a win for passengers, staff, and overall railway operations.

Drones have been flying since 2018, but this is a new angle

From coach rooftops to cramped spaces, these drones will come in handy for maintaining hygiene

Could drone cleaning go national?

After the successful pilot at Kamakhya since April 2024, railway officials are now exploring a nationwide expansion of the drone cleaning system. The goal is clear: smarter tech, safe for workers, and cleaner stations across India.
