Dealing With Digestive Issues? These 3 Agnis Would Help

According to Ayurveda, your consumed food supports the Dhātus. It offers strength, colour, perception, intellect, longevity and others to make your body. All this matters when the ingested food becomes bodily tissues. This whole process is called digestion and metabolism. Agni or biological fires make these processes possible, which is a catalyst in digestion and metabolism. And it is a vital aspect of a healthy body. Patanjali works as per Ayurveda for the same.

All About Agnis

The Agnis produce the enzymes in the Dhātu channels and work in different phases and aspects of digestion. The enzymes convert the food to the right Dhātu and mala. Ayurveda states a destroyed Agni can be fatal and lead to ailments. Agnis are essential for a long and healthy life.

When the nutrient plasma is not digested properly due to Jathāragni activities, the undigested food is called āma or āma rasa. Its toxicity causes varied ailments since its elements are not convertible into substances suitable for the body. It leads to indigestion, allergies, bronchial asthma, and other disorders. It also weakens digestive fires and metabolism and weakens organs.

Types of Agnis

Jathāragni: Jathāragni or Pācakāgni (digestive fire) or Kāyāgni (bodily fire) is found between the stomach and intestines near the navel. It helps digest food with its energy as soon as consumed. The food gets broken down to become substances equal to body constituents. Its main function is starting the metabolic process and keeping the other Agnis efficient, longevity, colour, voice, strength, energy, physical growth, ojas, etc. It has four states as per its intensity and levels. Vişāmagni or unstable state oscillates between intensity, slows digestion and causes constipation, flatulence, etc. Tīkşnāgni or intense state results in instant digestion from overeating. You suffer from dryness of the throat, lips and palate and a burning sensation in the same area. Mandāgni or low state causes little or no digestion of even small food. Weak digestion leads to discomfort, a heavy abdomen, bronchial asthma, etc. Samāgni or balanced state has the three Doşas and Jathāragni in balance. Your digestive system is at pace and without trouble.

Bhūtāgnis: Located in the liver, Bhūtāgnis or the Agnis of the five elements are: Bhaumāgni (Earth), Āpyāgni (Water), Āgniyāgni (Fire), Vāyavyvgni (Air) and Agāśāgni (Space or Ether). Each Agni converts the elements found in the food to match the same element in the body and its elements. So, the Bhūtāgnis divide food into five parts to sustain the five elements in different parts of the body.

Dhātvāgnis: This third group regulates the metabolic change of tissues. The Anna Rasa or Nutrient Plasma converted into five elements by Jathāragni and Bhūtāgnis reach the Dhātus’ channels and get further digested by the Dhātvāgnis. The Nutrient Plasma then is converted into Rasa, Rakta and other Dhātus. Like the Dhātus, there are seven Dhātvāgnis named after the respective tissues: Rasāgni, Raktāgni, Māṁsāgni, Medāgni, Asthigani, Majjāgni and Śukrāgni (in males) and Rajogni (in females). These restore the Dhātus and create waste products. The aggravated Dhātvāgnis leads to a decrease in Dhātus and vice versa. Dhātvāgnis’ low intensity leads to increased Dhātu creation. Low burning builds up Dhātu of low quality.
