Compulsory Feature of Two Wheelers: Anti-lock braking system is an important safety feature that prevents the bike’s tyres from locking up when sudden braking is applied. It monitors the speed of the wheels during braking.

ABS Compulsory on All Two Wheelers: Every day we hear news of accidents in India. In such a situation, the government has taken a big decision regarding the safety of two-wheelers in India. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has made ABS (Anti-Lock Breaking System) mandatory in all two-wheelers from the year 2026. Along with this, it will be mandatory for the dealer to provide two BIS certified helmets on the delivery of every two-wheeler. Let us know about it in detail.

These rules are going to be implemented from January 1, 2026, which aim to reduce deaths in two-wheeler accidents. Most of the deaths are such that occur due to skidding of the vehicle and head injuries.

For your information, let us tell you that earlier ABS was already mandatory in vehicles of 125 cc or more. At the same time, CBS is applicable in vehicles less than 125 cc. Now under the new rule, it will be mandatory to install ABS in all two-wheelers with all engine capacities, be it 100 cc or 500 cc.

What is ABS feature?

ABS i.e. Anti-lock Braking System is an important safety feature that prevents the bike’s tyres from locking when sudden braking is applied. It monitors the speed of the wheels during braking and helps the rider maintain balance by controlling the brake pressure when needed. This prevents the bike from slipping and reduces the risk of accidents.

Actually, there are two types of ABS – first Single Channel ABS which affects only the front tyre, and the second Dual Channel ABS which works on both the front and rear tyres. Therefore, it is considered more safe. Apart from this, the government is preparing to bring another important rule. Due to this rule, it will be made mandatory to provide two BIS-certified helmets with every two-wheeler.
