BJP leaders pay tribute to Dr Syama Prasad Mukherjee on death anniv

On the death anniversary of Dr Syama Prasad Mukherjee, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders and workers gathered before his statue in the national capital on Monday to pay floral tributes and remember his legacy.

The solemn event, presided over by Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva, was attended by minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta, and several senior party leaders, MPs, MLAs, and workers.

Pradhan, in his address, described Dr Mukherjee as not just a leader but “a living ideology”. He highlighted Dr Mukherjee’s historic stand against the policy of “two systems in one country”, and said his sacrifice laid the groundwork for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s move to abrogate Article 370 in 2019.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said, though India gained Independence in 1947, the struggle for its unity and integrity continued, with Dr Mukherjee leading from the front.

“He was the first to say that Kashmir is an inseparable part of India. He opposed the idea of needing permits to enter our own land,” she said.

She claimed that past governments failed to protect national integrity, but Dr Mukherjee laid down his life to assert it.

Raising slogans like “Jahan balidan hue Mukherjee, woh Kashmir hamara hai”, the large gathering of BJP workers paid tributes to the man they credited with sparking the ideological roots of today’s BJP. The event also saw a symbolic tree plantation drive led by Pradhan.

Sachdeva called Dr Mukherjee a “fearless patriot” and “the first martyr of independent India”, adding that, to understand Indian politics and nationalism, one must study his life.

“The circumstances of his death remain suspicious even today,” Sachdeva said, referring to the letter written by Dr Mukherjee’s mother to then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, demanding a probe into her son’s arrest and mysterious death.

Dr Mukherjee’s contributions to shaping India’s post-Independence political discourse were praised across speeches by BJP leaders.

“The Modi-led government’s last 11 years of service and reform are built on the very principles Mukherjee and Deendayal Upadhyaya envisioned,” said Pradhan.

Concluding the event, the CM said, “It is our responsibility to take Dr Mukherjee’s message of ‘Nation First’ to every household in Delhi. His legacy will always guide our politics and policies.”
