Bridging the gap: Punjabi edition of ‘The Making of a Cop’ released
The Punjabi edition of the acclaimed book The Making of a Cop: Core Aspects of Indian Policing, titled Ek Police Adhikari Di Gharat — Bharati Policing De Mudhle Pakh, authored by Kapurthala-based writer Dr Gurdeep SJ Ahluwalia, was officially launched at the Punjab Police Headquarters.
The launch event was presided over by Additional Director General of Police (Traffic) AS Rai, in the presence of senior officers and police personnel.
The foreword for the Punjabi edition has been written by former Punjab DGP IPS Sahota (Retd), who lauded the book for its clarity, structure and relevance to the evolving landscape of Indian policing. He emphasised that the book fills a crucial gap by providing valuable knowledge to officers in their mother tongue, describing it as “a professional companion for every young officer who aspires to serve with integrity and efficiency.”
Sahota also commended the book’s balance between academic insight and practical realities, calling it a much-needed addition to Punjabi police literature.
Addressing the gathering, ADGP Rai praised Dr Ahluwalia’s dedication and scholarly effort in making this work accessible to Punjabi readers. “This book in Punjabi will help personnel at all levels understand and absorb the principles of policing more naturally, in a language they connect with,” he said. “It’s not just a translation, but a thoughtful adaptation that will benefit both training and field operations.”
He further noted that the book offers a comprehensive exploration of the foundational aspects of police training and modern policing, making it a valuable tool for instructors, trainees and officers not only in Punjab but across India.
Dr Ahluwalia expressed gratitude to the Punjab Police leadership for supporting the Punjabi edition, revealing that the idea was inspired by senior officers who saw the need for such a resource in the local language to improve accessibility and practical utility. “The aim is to bring professional knowledge closer to the grassroots, where it matters most,” he said. “This book is meant to strengthen identity, confidence and understanding within the force.”
A special highlight of the book is a dedicated chapter under the “Emergency Response” section on the Sadak Suraksha Force (SSF) — Punjab’s road safety and emergency response initiative launched by the Chief Minister in January 2024. Since its inception, the SSF has become a model of road discipline and rapid response and its inclusion in the book serves as both recognition and inspiration.
