Google Search Rolls Out AI Mode In India To Take On ChatGPT: How To Use It
Google has introduced a new AI Mode in Search for users in India. This feature was unveiled in the US earlier this year, and now Indian users can also experiment with it. The new AI mode allows users to ask Google Search for creative responses to long prompts, similar to what ChatGPT offers. The AI Mode works in the same manner as ChatGPT, and Google has made it extremely accessible. The new AI Mode button shows up on the Search Bar itself, right next to the microphone and Google Lens options.
For Indian users, the AI Mode is available as an experiment in Labs in English only for now. There is no clarity on whether this mode will be made available in local languages or not. With AI Mode, Google looks to redirect users back to Search for AI-based queries as well. Platforms like ChatGPT and others require a login and a separate browser tab to use, whereas the AI mode is built into the Search bar.
Apart from ease in accessibility, Google’s AI Mode offers instant fresh answers to complex or multi-layered questions. It uses advanced reasoning and multi-modality, complete with essential details and links to explore. Google calls it the ‘most powerful AI search experience yet’. It uses a custom version of Gemini 2.5 that lets you ask longer, more complex or nuanced questions that would have previously required multiple searches. AI Mode is particularly helpful for exploratory questions and for more complicated tasks like comparing products, planning a trip, or understanding complex how-tos.
Google Search’s AI Mode allows users to even ask questions using images, taking photos, or even through voice. For instance, say a user has received a new plant as a gift and isn’t sure where to start. Open the Google App for Android and iOS, snap a photo and ask: "What's this plant and give me instructions on how to repot and take care of it." AI Mode will grasp the visual details, identify the plant, and provide a detailed, step-by-step response, complete with links to articles. Users could also follow up with questions like, "Where should I place it in my home for best growth?"
