Sourav Ganguly approves Rajkummar Rao's casting in biopic, gives update on filming and release

Reports of a Sourav Ganguly biopic have been circulating for a while, and it appears the project is indeed moving forward, as the former captain himself confirmed the news in a conversation with PTI. Rajkummar Rao will essay Ganguly, with the latter approving the casting choice, calling him the "right person" to portray him.

He also informed that the film will start shooting in January 2026, with the release expected in December of the same year. However, there has been no information yet on the director or the film's title. An official announcement is expected soon.

Here's what Ganguly said on the project's status: "It's going well. It will be released next December. Shooting starts in January. The pre-production, story writing, and scripting takes a lot of time. And shooting doesn't take that much time. It's about 3 months and then the post-production takes time."

Ganguly, who was part of the Indian cricket team from 1992 to 2008, added that he will be providing Rao with all the necessary inputs to ensure the performance is right.

Meanwhile, Rao, last seen in the time loop comedy Bhool Chuk Maaf, co-starring Wamiqa Gabbi, will be next seen in Maalik, a gangster action drama directed by Pulkit, which is set for theatrical release on July 11. The film is expected to present Rao in a never-before-seen avatar. It also features Prosenjit Chatterjee, Manushi Chhillar, and Medha Shankr.

In the recently released trailer, Rao's titular character can be seen uttering these lines: “There are two types of people in society. One who earns his bread with his sweat. And the other who takes away his bread with his blood and sweat. I'm the other one. I don't care what people think about me. Whether I'm a villain or a hero. I'm the hero in my story.”

The actor also has a dark comedy titled Toaster, co-starring Sanya Malhotra, slated for a Netflix release soon.
