Smart, AI-powered parking facilities on cards for Chandigarh

Smart, Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered parking lots could become a reality as the Chandigarh Parking Committee has proposed the implementation of the project covering 89 key locations in the city.

The proposal was tabled during a meeting to discuss ways to transform the city’s urban mobility and parking landscape, which was held under the chairpersonship of Mayor Harpreet Kaur Babla with local councillors.

The forward-looking initiative aims to address increasing parking challenges, ease traffic congestion and offer a seamless and citizen-centric parking experience through state-of-the-art technology.

The proposed Smart Parking System will have AI-enabled parking management and monitoring as well as automatic number plate recognition mechanism.

The system will also allow for real-time tracking of the availability of parking space and dynamic pricing. Demand-based slot allocation and pre-booking options will also be added to add further convenience.

The Committee emphasised the importance of public participation and sought inputs from all councillors to refine the proposal further. The initiative supports the city’s commitment to smart governance, sustainability and inclusivity, and aims to set a benchmark in modern urban mobility solutions.

It was decided during the meeting that the final draft of the Smart Parking Project will be presented in the upcoming General House meeting for final approval. The project aligns with Chandigarh’s vision of smart, sustainable and secure urban development.

Congress councilor Gurpreet Singh said the contractor should be allowed to charge parking fee only after converting the space into smart praking lots. He said there was no justification for allowing the contractor to charge fee from the day of taking over and being given 90 days to make the switch.

There was disagreement in the meeting after Congress councilor Sachin Galav opposed the distribution of an invitation card for Samvidhan Hatya Diwas to be organised tomorrow to mark the 50th anniversary of Emergency. He tore off the card, saying the meeting was not the approproate place to distribute such invites.
