Eyewitnesses said the man was even made to sit briefly on the bonnet of a moving police vehicle while a loudspeaker announced his arrest – drawing both cheers from some locals and widespread condemnation on social media.
According to police, the accused – allegedly involved in a recent robbery – was identified by the victim while the latter was buying medicines near the Hospital. The victim, who had reportedly lost Rs 40,000 in the robbery, confronted the accused, prompting the latter to retaliate with a knife attack. A chase ensued, and the man was eventually apprehended by police patrol personnel with the help of locals.
Bakshi Nagar Police Station SHO Azad Manhas stated that the accused is a known criminal and part of a gang that was recently busted. He was reportedly intoxicated at the time of the incident.
After being caught, the situation spiraled beyond standard police procedure. Videos surfaced showing the accused being paraded with a shoes garland and mocked by onlookers, some of whom raised slogans in favour of the police. The visuals sparked outrage, with many users online questioning the legality and ethics of the treatment meted out to the accused.
Notably, this is the second such incident in Jammu city in recent weeks. Earlier, on June 11, three individuals accused in a Gangyal shooting incident were allegedly thrashed in public by police.
Reacting strongly to the latest episode, Jammu’s Senior Superintendent of Police Joginder Singh condemned the conduct of the personnel involved and termed their actions “unprofessional” and “unbecoming of the members of a disciplined organization”.
“In order to ascertain actual facts, a preliminary enquiry is hereby ordered and entrusted to SDPO (Sub-Divisional Police Officer) City North, Jammu who will enquire into the matter and submit his findings to this office within a week’s time positively,” the SSP said in an order.
The incident has once again brought into focus the need for police accountability and adherence to due process, even when dealing with hardened criminals.
