Delhi won’t be standstill this monsoon: Sirsa

With the monsoon setting in, the Delhi Government has launched a massive citywide drive to desilt storm water drains and ensure that the Capital remains flood-free and functional during the rainy season.

As part of this initiative, Delhi’s Environment and Industries Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa, accompanied by local MLA Poonam Sharma and senior officials from the Industries Department and DSIIDC, conducted an on-ground inspection of the Wazirpur Industrial Area on Tuesday.

“Delhi will not come to a standstill this monsoon. Our government is mobilising the entire machinery — from elected representatives to officers — to ensure that every drain is cleaned and streets remain water-free,” said Minister Sirsa.

During the inspection, the Minister reviewed the completed drain-cleaning work and expressed satisfaction with the pace and quality of desilting in the area. Highlighting safety, he reiterated the Delhi Government’s directive to avoid manual cleaning and instead use mechanised equipment like super sucker machines.

“Despite challenges like industrial waste and sewage, drains in Wazirpur are flowing smoothly. This is proof of the intent and groundwork being done by our government,” he said, praising MLA Poonam Sharma for her persistent follow-ups and close coordination with local officials.

In a significant announcement, Minister Sirsa revealed that the Delhi Government has reinstated the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model for redevelopment of industrial areas, following strong demand from the industrial sector. The model —earlier successful in Narela and Bawana — will see private concessionaires take charge of long-term infrastructure upgrades and maintenance.

“Redevelopment and monsoon preparedness go hand in hand. Our vision is to make Delhi’s industrial zones not just flood-free but future-ready,” he added.
