Pakistani army officer who captured Indian Wing Commander Abhinandan killed in clash with…, his name was…

Pakistani Army officer Major Moiz Abbas has been killed in South Waziristan, according to reports in Pakistani media. Moiz Abbas was the same officer who had captured Indian Air Force pilot Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman back in February 2019, after Abhinandan’s fighter jet crashed inside Pakistan while he was chasing enemy aircraft.

At that time, Abhinandan was taken into custody by the Pakistani army and later returned to India after diplomatic talks.

As per reports, Major Moiz Abbas died during a clash with Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) on Monday. The gunfight happened in Sargodha Khurram area of South Waziristan. TTP fighters had reportedly set up an ambush and attacked Pakistani soldiers. In that attack, two Pakistani officers were killed, including Major Abbas.

His death has been widely reported by the Pakistani media and marks another violent episode in the ongoing conflict between the Pakistani military and TTP militants in the region.

Who was Moiz Abbas?

Moiz Abbas first came into the spotlight in February 2019, when reports said he was the Pakistani officer who captured Indian pilot Wing Commander Abhinandan. He later gave several interviews describing what happened that day. This week Pakistani TV channels and newspapers said he has been killed. On Tuesday the Pakistani Army confirmed his death, but it did not mention the Abhinandan incident.

The current army operation

Arab News reports that the Army’s media wing, ISPR, said troops launched an operation in South Waziristan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, near the Afghan border, after learning that militants were hiding there. In its statement, the Army called these militants part of “India-sponsored terrorism.”
