RAJOURI, June 25: A large group of paramedical students from Government Medical College (GMC) Rajouri staged a protest on Wednesday against Jammu University, alleging serious irregularities in the evaluation of their recent examination results. The aggrieved students boycotted classes and blocked the Rajouri-Dhanore road, raising slogans and demanding justice.
The protest began early in the morning as students gathered outside the college premises and blocked the main road, causing disruption in traffic for several hours. The demonstrators expressed deep dissatisfaction over the recently declared results, in which, according to the students, out of 44 students, 40 were declared failed, with the majority failing in just two subjects-Physiology and Biochemistry.
“How is it possible that 90% of the students fail only in two specific subjects? This clearly raises serious question about the transparency and fairness of the evaluation process,” said one of the protesting students.
The students further alleged that while Jammu University allows answer sheet re-evaluation and scrutiny for students of other courses, the same facility was denied to paramedical students. Instead, the university announced a supplementary examination, asking students to pay a fee of Rs 3000, which the students termed “unjust and discriminatory.”
Amidst growing tension, police officials reached the protest site and assured students that their demands would be forwarded to higher authorities. Following the assurance, students temporarily called off the protest but warned that if a rechecking opportunity is not provided before the supplementary exams, they would launch a hunger strike.
Meanwhile, the Principal of GMC Rajouri Dr AS Bhatia expressed serious concern over the matter. He questioned the entire examination process, pointing out lapses in syllabus handling and exam management by the university.
“How can it be justified that a 3-year course is taking 6 years to complete? Results are declared after a delay of 7 months, and question papers are not aligned with the prescribed syllabus,” the Principal said.
The Principal assured the students that he would personally take up the issue with the Controller of Examinations at Jammu University.
