Mahadangal: BJP Slams Congress—Says ‘No Apology for Killing Democracy’ | ABP NEWS
On Samvidhan Hatya Diwas, a fiery debate unfolded on ABP News’ Mahadangal show, marking 50 years since the 1975 Emergency. BJP spokesperson Siddharth Yadav hit out at Congress, accusing it of never apologizing for the "darkest chapter in Indian democracy." He said, “If the Congress thinks people have forgotten the Emergency, it reflects their arrogance. No Congress leader, including Kharge or Rahul Gandhi, has truly apologized for suspending fundamental rights and muzzling the press.” Quoting historical incidents, Yadav invoked Justice HR Khanna’s dissent and the Supreme Court’s controversial ruling during the Emergency, stating that even deaths in custody were dismissed without accountability. “It was the longest night after independence,” he added. Congress countered, saying the BJP is afraid of Rahul Gandhi’s Sanvidhan Bachao Yatra. The party maintained that Rahul has already acknowledged the Emergency as a mistake. Congress leader Charan Singh Sapra said, “Yes, we lost the 1977 election because of it, but Indira Gandhi returned with a two-thirds majority in 1980. People forgave us.” Home Minister Amit Shah also said, “Those who imposed Emergency now talk of democracy. They turned from protectors to predators of the Constitution.” The debate underscores how Emergency continues to stir intense political fault lines.
