Romanian students protesting against potential scholarships cut: Reports
CHISINAU, June 26:
Students in Romania are protesting against the government’s intention to cut scholarships by 40% due to economic issues, Romanian broadcaster Digi24 reported on Thursday.
The Romanian National Alliance of Student Organizations (ANOSR) has organized protests in several university centers across the country, including in Bucharest, Timisoara, Iasi, Cluj-Napoca and other cities, the broadcaster said.
The government is planning to change how scholarships are calculated, which will reduce them from $85 to $50 per month.
ANOSR believes that such measures will exacerbate educational inequality, depriving students from low-income families of access to higher education.
“These unnecessary austerity measures are proposed in a context where only 22.5% of young people aged 24 35 are university graduates, and the dropout rate exceeds 40%,” the alliance was quoted as saying by the broadcaster.
ANOSR unites students from 20 university centers in Romania.
Romania is experiencing economic difficulties, and the government needs a package of measures aimed at cutting spending. In recent years, Romania has spent more than it could afford. In 2024, Romania’s budget deficit was 9.4% of the country’s GDP. The authorities promised that it would be reduced to 7% in 2025, but no concrete measures were adopted.
