While India's Test team battles it out in England, their T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav is using the break to recuperate himself for the demanding white-ball season ahead. The 34-year-old had recently flown to Munich, Germany, to undergo a sports hernia surgery, and the latest update is that the procedure has been completed successfully.
Yadav took to Instagram to reveal the good news and seemed in high spirits.
"Life update: Underwent surgery for a sports hernia in the lower right abdomen. Grateful to share that after a smooth surgery, I am already on the road to recovery. Can't wait to be back." read the post from T20I skipper who also posted a picture of himself from the hospital bed.
This is Yadav's third surgery in three years, having previously undergone surgeries in late 2023 (ankle) and a sports hernia in early 2024.
The dynamic batter had a prolific IPL 2025 where he top-scored for Mumbai Indians with 717 runs at a staggering strike-rate of 167.91. Yadav notched up five half-centuries, and his overall consistency was mind-boggling as he broke Robin Uthappa's 11-year-old record for most consecutive 25-plus scores in the IPL. After the mega event, Yadav participated in Mumbai's domestic T20 league, but his campaign with the team was underwhelming, as they failed to make it to the knockout stages.
India's next white-ball assignment will be the tour of Bangladesh in July, where they will play three ODIs and as many T20Is. Yadav hasn't played 50-over cricket for India since the 2023 World Cup final and is unlikely to feature in the ODIs against Bangladesh. As things stand, he is in a race against time to be fit for the T20Is, with deputy Axar Patel expected to take over in case of an emergency.
The tour to Bangladesh will be followed by a trip Down Under as India are slated to play five T20Is against Australia followed by white-ball games against South Africa at home.
Yadav took over as India's new T20I captain from June 2024 after the team's World Cup-winning campaign in USA and West Indies. The then skipper Rohit Sharma, along with Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja, announced their retirements after the final, signalling the start of a new era in India's shortest format.
