Viral image does not show 70-year-old Muslim man from Rajasthan married to his teen granddaughter

Images of a young woman with an elderly man are being shared widely with claims that a 70-year-old Muslim man from Churu, Rajasthan, married his 19-year-old granddaughter.

On June 18, 2025, a Facebook page named Khabri TV shared a collage of images of the two, claiming that Liaquat Ali was a 70-year-old resident of Churu who married his teen granddaughter. The post alleged that following the death of her parents, Liaquat Ali raised the child himself and ultimately went on to marry her. (Archive)

Fact Check

To verify the authenticity of the viral claims, we did a keyword search and found a YouTube video by Syed Basit Ali on June 14, 2022. The video is an interview with the same people shown in the collage. The couple is from Lahore, Pakistan, and had a unique story about how they got married.

According to the interview, the man (70) is Liaquat Ali and the woman (19) is his wife, Shumaila Ali. They told the interviewer that they fell in love during their daily morning walk routine. The woman
goes to say that her parents were initially against their marriage, but eventually she managed to convince them.

“One doesn’t see age in love, it just happens. People should refrain from commenting on others who marry with a vast age difference. They should be respected for their decision. It is their life, and they can live it the way they want,” she adds.

We also found a few news reports regarding this from 2022. The Economic Times had reported this. However, the outlet featured it under its Spotlight section, which is for paid or branded content. The Tribune also published a report based on the YouTube video.

From just the video by Syed Basit Ali, Alt News was unable to verify whether the interview depicted was a real incident or a scripted video made for entertainment. We reached out to him for clarification and the story will be updated based on his response. But we found that the YouTuber frequently features content from Pakistan, capturing unorthodox stories. So, even if it is a scripted video, the couple featured in the viral image shared recently—reportedly Liaquat Ali and Shumaila Ali—are not from Churu, Rajasthan, but Pakistan. Also, going by their accounts in the interview, the two are not related.

Thus, the widely circulated claim suggesting that a 70-year-old from Churu, Rajasthan, married his granddaughter is baseless. Also, the viral images of them are at least three years old.
