Khalini-Talland flyover to decongest Shimla roads

The ambitious Khalini-Talland flyover, which has faced multiple delays over the years, is finally set to become a reality, with construction work scheduled to begin within the next month. This development follows the awarding of the construction tender to Sai Eternal Foundation by the Central Public Works Department (CPWD).

Gopal Chand, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Shimla Smart City Mission Limited, confirmed that the tender has been allotted to Sai Foundation and that construction is expected to commence within a month. The project is projected to be completed by next year.

Originally proposed under the Smart City Mission, the 220-metre-long flyover is estimated to cost approximately Rs 17.97 crore. Although initially scheduled to begin in 2021, the project encountered several setbacks due to inspection delays and changes in the technical design. Despite these challenges, some preliminary work has already been undertaken, including the widening of a five-metre stretch at Khalini Chowk by the CPWD.

According to CPWD officials, the flyover will be built in phases. The work will begin with site inspections and groundwork, followed by foundation laying. Subsequent phases will include the installation of steel girders, deck construction, road strengthening and finally, the installation of railings and safety barriers.

Steel has been chosen as the primary construction material due to the region’s challenging hilly terrain. Officials noted that steel offers advantages such as reduced weight, enhanced durability, and resilience to extreme weather conditions. Additionally, it allows for faster installation, minimising risks like landslides during the construction period.

Once completed, the flyover is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion in Shimla. It will serve as an alternative route for vehicles travelling between BCS and Talland, reducing dependency on the heavily burdened Khalini Road. Currently, thousands of vehicles commute daily between Vikas Nagar, BCS and Khalini, resulting in major traffic snarls—especially during peak office hours. The flyover aims to decongest these routes and offer smoother, faster travel for residents and commuters alike.
