Workshop emphasises role of psycho-social care in disaster response
The two-day special workshop on “Psycho-Social Care,” organised by the District Disaster Management Authority, concluded on Wednesday at Bachat Bhawan.
Addressing the gathering, Deputy Commissioner Anupam Kashyap highlighted the importance of managing the psychological well-being of people during disasters. “Handling emotional and mental distress is the biggest challenge in such situations. By supporting each other, we can significantly reduce the disaster’s impact,” he said. Emphasising the role of psycho-social care in rescue efforts, Kashyap cited last year’s Samej tragedy in Rampur as a painful event that offered critical lessons for future preparedness.
He said the administration has enhanced its disaster response mechanisms and is actively promoting community participation. Monsoon preparedness across the district has been completed, and nodal officers have been appointed in all areas. Kashyap warned that strict action would be taken against any officer found negligent during a crisis.
The workshop covered a range of topics, including the psychological impact of disasters on children, women, and senior citizens, and the importance of gender-sensitive approaches during disaster management. It also introduced participants to effective psychological care techniques suitable for different groups.
A short play depicting the Samej tragedy was presented to illustrate the emotional impact of disasters and the steps taken for psycho-social care in its aftermath. District Disaster Management Authority CEO Jyoti Rana provided a detailed overview of the workshop.
Representatives from various stakeholder departments participated, underscoring the collaborative approach needed for effective disaster response.
