Indian Railways Refund: If your train journey has turned into a problem. If the train changed its route, the AC stopped working or the train arrived very late, then now you do not have to bear the loss. IRCTC gives you a chance to get a refund in such cases, for which you have to file TDR (Ticket Deposit Receipt). The passenger will get the full amount of the ticket back.

What is TDR?

TDR means Ticket Deposit Receipt. When a passenger is unable to travel in a train or faces any major problem in the journey. Like coach not being attached, AC failing, train route changing etc. So he can file TDR on IRCTC and start the process of getting back the money spent on that ticket.

How to file TDR

  • First login to www.irctc.co.in.
  • Go to MY ACCOUNT section and click on My Transactions >> File TDR.
  • Select the PNR number for which you want to file TDR.
  • Select the correct reason why you could not travel from the drop-down menu.
  • Select the passengers who could not travel from the list.
  • Click on File TDR button.
  • Read the instructions that appear on the screen carefully and click on Yes.
  • If the process is successful, you will see “TDR Successfully Filed”.

For what reasons can TDR be filed?

  • According to IRCTC, you can file TDR for many reasons. But there is a fixed time limit for every reason.
  • If your train was delayed by more than 3 hours and you did not travel, you can file TDR till the departure time of the train.
  • If for some reason your booked coach did not arrive and you had to travel in a lower class, you can file TDR up to 2 days after the certificate is issued.
  • If the AC in your train was faulty, you can file TDR within 20 hours of the train reaching the destination station.
  • If all the passengers were confirmed but no one could travel, TDR can be filed up to 4 hours before the train departure.
  • If the train route was changed and you did not travel, TDR can be filed within 72 hours from the scheduled departure time of the train.
  • If the train did not pass through your boarding station, you can file a TDR within 72 hours from the scheduled departure time of the train.
  • If the train did not reach your destination station, you can still file a TDR within 72 hours.
  • If some passengers in your ticket were confirmed and some were on waiting list, and the waiting list passengers could not travel, you can file a TDR within 72 hours from the arrival of the train at the destination station.
  • If all the passengers were waitlisted and no one travelled, then TDR can be filed up to 30 minutes before the scheduled departure time of the train.
  • If for some reason you had to travel in a lower class and you want the fare difference refunded, then TDR has to be filed within 2 days of the issuance of the certificate.
  • If you did only a part of the journey and did not go further, then you can file TDR within 72 hours from the scheduled departure time of the train.
  • If you got a seat in a lower class and did not travel, then TDR can be filed up to 3 hours before the actual departure time of the train.
  • If the coach was damaged and you could not travel, then TDR can be filed up to 3 hours before the departure of the train.
  • If the train did not reach your destination station and was stopped midway, then TDR can be filed within 72 hours from the scheduled arrival time.

In which cases will you not get a refund?

If you have planned a journey on two connecting trains and for some reason you miss the next train, IRCTC does not take responsibility for it and no refund is given on it. If there is any problem in your train journey, you can reduce your loss a little through IRCTC’s TDR process. It is important that you file TDR with the correct reason in time.
