Breaking News: Massive Landslide Hits Kedarnath Yatra Route Near Sonprayag, Pilgrims Injured and Route Temporarily Closed
A massive landslide has disrupted the Kedarnath Yatra near Munkatia, between Sonprayag and Gaurikund in Uttarakhand. The pilgrimage route has been temporarily closed after heavy rocks began falling continuously from the hills, posing a severe threat to thousands of pilgrims. Several people sustained injuries due to the falling debris and were immediately hospitalized. Rescue teams, including the SDRF and local police, are working tirelessly to safely evacuate stranded pilgrims. JCB machines have been deployed to clear the debris and reopen the route, but continuous rockfall has made the task extremely difficult. Authorities have been allowing pilgrims to cross high-risk areas by running across quickly, as even a moment’s delay could prove fatal. The situation remains dangerous with weather forecasts predicting more rainfall until June 30. The region has already experienced heavy overnight showers, triggering the landslide. Officials have advised pilgrims to avoid traveling unless absolutely necessary. Meanwhile, several pilgrims who completed darshan and are returning from Kedarnath have also been stopped en route for safety. This stretch, particularly Munkatia, is known to be highly landslide-prone and was a major disaster spot in previous years. The administration remains on high alert as monsoon challenges continue to mount in the region.
