When Will Lonavala’s Grand Canyon-Style Glass Skywalk Be Built? Not Anytime Soon!
The much-anticipated Grand Canyon-like glass skywalk to be built in Pune district's Lonavala has been put on the back burner, reportedly due to a lack of interest from bidders in the current public-private partnership model. Despite the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) floating tenders twice, including international bids, not even one taker came forward.
What now?
Now, the project is set to undergo a complete redesign and will be implemented on a new model. It is likely to include a viability gap funding model to push forward the project.
When will the project be completed?
While the project was originally slated for completion in June 2027, the deadline may now be extended further.
More details about the project:
The project was proposed by Maval MLA Sunil Shelke. The location to develop the skywalk is 15 km from Lonavala. The land acquisition for the same, including forest land and private plots, has made some headway.
The earlier project design included the construction of a six-metre-wide and 90-metre-long bridge, with the main attraction being a 125-metre-long and six-metre-wide skywalk. Facilities for adventure sports like zip lining and bungee jumping, an amphitheatre for 1,000 people, 24 gazebos, and a parking space for 1,500 cars and 2,000 two-wheelers were also to be constructed as part of the project design. However, with the project design set to be changed, we have to wait and watch.
