Aamir Khan's solution to improve the movie business: 'Don't sell to OTT before six months. Everyone has to take a step'

Aamir Khan believes the quality of films being made in India hasn't changed in the last three to four years, and that the only way to improve business is by not opting to sell your films to OTT platforms before six months have passed.

In an interaction with Hindustan Times, the Sitaare Zameen Par star said if given the option, he would definitely pick theatres. He feels the "safety crutch" of OTT business has made things worse. "The difference is, earlier, films would come to OTT six months after release. So, the simple solution is this: if people want us to return to square one, studios and producers will have to insist, ‘We won’t sell to OTT before six months.’ And then see how the business changes."

However, Aamir maintains that it's a decision that filmmakers have to take for themselves. As far as the actor-producer is concerned, the idea of releasing a film on OTT just two months after its theatrical release is unacceptable. "I have made it very clear to my audience: I will stick to the old pattern of releases. OTTs have given me healthy offers to bring the film out within two months of its theatrical release. That's not agreeable to me. As a producer, I no longer see OTT as an option. Every producer has to do this — if things need to change, I alone cannot make a change happen. Yes, it might change for me, but if the industry wants to see a change happen, they have to take a collective step."

Meanwhile, Sitaare Zameen Par is running in theatres with a largely positive response from audiences looking for a feel-good experience with their families.
