The main accused in the Kasba college girl gangrape case is an office bearer of the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) — the student wing of West Bengal's ruling Trinamool Congress, the opposition has alleged. Both the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) of the CPI(M) and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) have come up with serious allegations against the primary accused.
The RSS-backed ABVP has reportedly claimed that the main accused in the case is the secretary of the South Kolkata Chhatra Parishad. They also added that the two other accused in the case have links to the TMCP. SFI, meanwhile, alleged that the man — whose identity is yet to be revealed by Kolkata Police — is notorious for issuing rape threats against women. There are molestation charges against the main accused in the college, the Left student body reportedly told Anandabazar on Friday.

Making matters worse for the ruling party, Bengali media reports have claimed that they have identified the accused on social media. The Trinamool Chhatra Parishad is repeatedly mentioned on his Facebook profile, where he identified himself as the organizing secretary of the South Calcutta District TMCP, Anandabazar said. He also declared that he was the president of the TMCP unit of South Calcutta Law College.
The Trinamool student body has, however, distanced itself from the accused. Denying that the accused is a local leader of the organisation, the Chhatra Parishad said that the accused should be handed exemplary punishment if found guilty.
Three men — two students and an alumnus — were picked up by the Kasba Police after a college student filed a complaint accusing them of raping her on the college campus on Wednesday evening. The two college students were picked up by the police on Thursday evening, while the main accused was caught by midnight based on inputs provided by the co-accused. A forensic test of the crime scene is expected to begin later in the day, while the medical checkup of the complainant has been completed.
