Tender Palm Super Speciality Hospital Performs Uttar Pradesh's First Pulmonary Valve Replacement Without Open-Heart Surgery
For the first time in Uttar Pradesh, Tender Palm Super Speciality Hospital successfully replaced a patient’s pulmonary valve without any open-heart surgery.
The Interventional Cardiology Department at Tender Palm Super Speciality completed this procedure through a catheter-based technique in just 30 minutes.
Dr. Gautam Swaroop, Director of Cardiology at Tender Palm, shared that the patient, a 35-year-old man, had a congenital heart condition known as TOF (Tetralogy of Fallot). In this condition, there are holes between the two chambers of the heart, and the pulmonary valve—which supplies blood to the lungs—becomes narrowed.

However, over time, the replaced valve degenerated and again became narrowed, leading to symptoms like fatigue and shortness of breath. The patient consulted a cardiac surgeon again, but a second open-heart surgery was considered high-risk. He then approached other heart specialists in search of an alternative to avoid another open surgery.
After reviewing the patient’s surgical history, Dr. Gautam Swaroop decided to opt for a non-surgical valve replacement. This modern procedure is known as TPVR/TPVI (Transcatheter Pulmonary Valve Replacement/Implantation).
This technique does not require general anesthesia or surgery. Instead, using a catheter inserted through the leg veins, the old valve was fractured using a balloon, and a new pulmonary valve was implanted within it—a process called "valve-in-valve" (TPVI).
The entire procedure took only 30 minutes, and the patient was discharged the very next day.
The procedure was successfully carried out by Dr. Gautam Swaroop along with cardiologists Dr. Mohit Mohan Singh, Dr. Adesh Kumar Singh, and Dr. Krishna Kumar Sahani.
Dr. Gautam Swaroop noted that many such advanced procedures are now available in cardiology, which allow replacement of all four heart valves without open-heart surgery.
At Tender Palm Super Speciality Hospital, such catheter-based cardiac procedures are performed regularly.
This was the first-ever Transcatheter Pulmonary Valve Replacement (TPVR) conducted in Uttar Pradesh.
