West Indies cricketer sexual assault row: Guyanese teenager was raped after picked up for socialising, claims family

After a shocking report claimed that a West Indies cricketer — part of the ongoing Test series against Australia — allegedly sexually assaulted eleven women, including a teenager, one of the victims has come forward to narrate her ordeal. The cricketer, who is yet to be named, hails from Guyana — also the home of the complainant, who was 18 at the time of the incident.

The family of the young woman told the media back home that they received little to no support from law enforcement, who allegedly attempted to hush up the crime. There were efforts at an out-of-court settlement by the sportstar’s family, but the victim's family has decided against accepting any money, despite their financial troubles.

In March 2023, the girl was picked up from Berbice by the accused cricketer and taken to New Amsterdam in eastern Guyana. The survivor called her mother over the phone and confirmed that she was out socialising with the cricketer. The family knew him very well and told the press that there was no reason for concern when she was invited by him.

The New Amsterdam residential block she was taken to had many people around, and she initially felt comfortable, Kaieteur News quoted the family as saying. However, the cricketer then took her upstairs. She followed him, as there were still people in the yard of the same building. But once inside, the man reportedly forced himself on her — tearing off her clothes.

According to the mother of the survivor, her daughter has not been the same ever since, and has been depressed and suicidal, the news report added.

A law firm called Fields and Stoby has been recruited and will be representing the girl when the matter reaches court, Guyanese media reports stated.

It was Rawle Toney who broke the story, titled “Monster in Maroon”, on Thursday, claiming to have “heard accounts from no fewer than eleven women, one of them a teenager.”
