‘A big trade deal can be made with India’: Donald Trump reiterates adding US wants India to reduce…, not easy to do business with…
New Delhi: US President Donald Trump has made an important statement on trade relations and tariff policy with India. On Friday, June 27, he said that trade in India is currently quite restricted, and the US is working towards an agreement with New Delhi that can reduce trade barriers.
What did Trump indicate?
Trump indicated that he hopes to completely remove trade barriers with India. However, he described it as unimaginable and said that this goal may not be achieved immediately.
“Everybody wants to make a deal and have a part of it. Remember a few months ago, the press was saying, ‘You really have anybody of any interest? Well, we just signed with China yesterday. We are having some great deals. We have one coming up, maybe with India. Very big one,” he said.
Is US serious about trade with India?
It is clear from President Trump’s statement that the USA is serious about making trade with India easier, but India will also change its policies very thoughtfully.
Donald Trump also said that in the next few days, the USA will send letters to many other countries and inform them about the tariffs. He informed that the US has signed a trade agreement with China and now it is planning to implement the same policy with more than 200 countries.
Trump’s grouse against India
Regarding India, he reiterated that it is not easy to do business in New Delhi at present and the US wants India to reduce its trade barriers.
However, India’s foreign ministry has claimed that the trade issue did not come up for discussion in recent talks with Trump, raising questions over Trump’s claims.
Reaching an agreement could be difficult
This policy of President Trump is part of his ‘America First’ policy, under which he is prioritising US interests by imposing reciprocal tariffs. For India, this could mean that it will have to reconsider its tariff policies. In some recent steps, India has indicated to increase imports from the US, which could support Trump’s policy. However, the terms of the trade agreement between the two countries are yet to be agreed upon and this process could be complicated.
