New Delhi: Former Indian cricketer Murali Karthik has expressed disappointment over Shubman Gill’s captaincy in the first Test match played against England at Headingley, Leeds. India could not defend the target of 371 runs in the fourth innings and lost the match by five wickets. Karthik said that Gill’s captaincy lacked authority and many players were seen interfering in decisions during the match. He stressed that the advice of senior players is important, but the final decision on the field has to be taken by the captain.

If senior players sometimes give suggestions regarding fielding settings, then it is fine, but when this happens repeatedly, it is not a good sign.”

Former England captain Nasser Hussain also commented on Shubman Gill’s captaincy, saying that Gill did not have an on-field presence like Rohit Sharma or Virat Kohli. Despite five Indian batsmen scoring centuries, India could not defend the target of 371 runs and England won the match by five wickets to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.
