A 55-year-old Indian businessman was killed during a robbery attempt in Dubai. Five men of Pakistani nationality have been arrested and are waiting for the hearing of the case at the Dubai Criminal Court.
The defendants had allegedly broken into the victim's residence in the Al Wuhaida area. The victim was tied up before being assaulted with a blunt object and later strangled to death. Their primary motive was theft according to a prosecutor.
The victims son had returned home at around 9.30 pm and found his father motionless and noticed that a safe was missing from the bedroom. Prosecutors said that the safe contained money, passports and jewellery.
A police team, including forensic experts, were dispatched to the spot as soon as information was received. Security cameras around the villa showed that three of the accused entered the house around 4 pm on the day of the crime. They left the premises twenty minutes later with the medium-sized safe.
Two of the suspects were arrested in their home country in coordination with international authorities and were later extradited to the UAE. Three of them were arrested within the country.
One defendant had tried to claim that he was only the driver and was unaware of the full plan. The group had travelled to a farm in another emirate and had divided the contents of the safe there, according to a prosecutor.
The five defendants will be put to trial on charges of premeditated murder and theft. All of them had confessed during the questioning.
