Year on, few takers for 24×7 shop plan

A year after the UT Administration launched its ambitious plan to keep city markets open 24×7, the scheme has failed to make a mark, with only 152 traders availing the facility out of nearly 30,000 shops operating in Chandigarh.

Launched on June 26, 2024, the scheme aimed to boost nightlife, enhance consumer convenience, and generate employment. However, the response has remained lukewarm despite initial awareness drives conducted by the Administration across markets.

According to official data, most of the establishments that have opted for the 24-hour operation belong to major multinational food chains and logistics companies. These include outlets such as 24 Seven, KFC, Yo! China, Subway, McDonald’s, IDS Omni Solutions, Scooty Logistics, etc.

One of the limitations of the scheme is that it is not extended to bars and liquor vends, which are prohibited from operating round the clock. Officials clarified that the 24-hour operations are strictly voluntary and only available to shops and commercial establishments registered with the Labour Department.

Despite there being over 100 markets in the city, the absence of strong interest from local traders has left the administration’s vision for a vibrant nightlife unfulfilled.

Market experts and trader associations cite multiple reasons for the poor response, including lack of adequate footfall at night, security concerns, and increased operational costs.

“The scheme may be appealing on paper, but most small and medium traders don’t see enough economic benefit in keeping shops open all night. Also, there is no additional support in terms of policing, parking, or infrastructure,” said a local market association member.
