Public concern mounts over sewer, drainage work in Goraya, MC steps in

The ongoing construction of a sewer system and installation of drainage pipes near the main square of Goraya has sparked growing concern among residents in recent days. Complaints of waterlogging, sewage overflow and improper waste disposal have intensified public pressure, prompting senior municipal officials to visit the site for an on-the-spot assessment.

Goraya Municipal Council (MC) President Harmesh Lal, Senior Vice-President Sudesh Kumar Billa, Councilor Rajni Gaba, Ward 5 In-charge Pankaj Rai and key administrative officers arrived at the location to address the grievances raised by locals.

Senior Vice-President Sudesh Kumar Billa stated that the council had received repeated complaints from area residents about a local shopkeeper allegedly disposing of waste materials directly into the sewer system. “This irresponsible action is blocking the drains, causing dirty water to back up into the streets and residential areas,” Billa said. He added that, in response, the council initiated the laying of proper drainage pipes to mitigate the issue and ensure clean, functional sewage flow.

“No individual will be allowed to discharge untreated waste directly into the public drains,” he emphasised. “Shopkeepers are expected to install their own water treatment systems, and any water — whether waste or rainwater — must be channelled properly. Strict action will be taken against any violators.”

Ward 5 In-charge Pankaj Rai underlined that the primary duty of the municipal council is to resolve public issues, not to favour any individual for private benefit. “It is completely unjust to inconvenience the entire locality for the sake of one person’s gain,” he remarked.

Councilor Rajni Gaba pointed out that the work currently underway in the shared Ward 4 and 5 area, specifically in Dilbagh Colony, involves the installation of overflow drainage pipes. She expressed confidence that the persistent issue of stagnant sewage water in the colony would soon be resolved, based on assurances given by the municipal leadership.

MC President Harmesh Lal reiterated that the new sewer system is being developed to address the broader citywide problem of water stagnation. “This project is meant to serve the public interest. No one will be allowed to exploit it for personal gain,” he asserted.
