Breaking News: Election Commission Under Fire as Bihar Begins Fresh Voter List Review | ABP NEWS
As Bihar heads toward crucial Assembly elections in October or November 2025, the Election Commission of India has launched a Special Intensive Revision of the voter list, sparking major political debates across the state. The process includes door-to-door verification by Booth Level Officers (BLOs), who are helping citizens fill out verification forms. The number of BLOs has been increased from 77,895 to nearly 80,000 to handle the large-scale task of verifying around 8 crore voters. This initiative, though part of routine electoral preparations, has stirred political controversy. Opposition leaders, including RJD’s Tejashwi Yadav, have raised concerns about the tight timeline—only 25 days to complete what previously took nearly two years. He questioned how officials would verify such a massive number of voters in such a short span. Chirag Paswan, however, defended the Commission and criticized the Opposition’s objections. A major point of contention is the requirement of documents for verification—documents that many poor and migrant workers may not possess, raising fears of disenfranchisement. Congress MP Ranjeet Ranjan and AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi have also questioned the Election Commission’s intentions, alleging the timing of this drive just before elections is suspicious. Owaisi has even written a letter to the Election Commission, warning that many genuine Indian citizens could lose their right to vote. The final voter list is scheduled to be published on September 30, 2025. While the ruling NDA sees the exercise as necessary for electoral transparency, the Opposition views it as a move to manipulate the voter base. Political temperatures are rising, with demands that the Election Commission clarify its position and take all parties into confidence to ensure no genuine voter is excluded.
