Janhit: Bihar Voter List Verification Sparks National Political Row, Opposition Raises NRC Fears | ABP NEWS

The Election Commission has launched a Special Intensive Revision of the voter list in Bihar ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections. While the Commission says this is a constitutional and routine process, opposition parties like the RJD, Congress, CPI(ML), Mamata Banerjee's TMC, Akhilesh Yadav's Samajwadi Party, and Asaduddin Owaisi’s AIMIM have raised objections. They fear it is a backdoor attempt to implement the NRC (National Register of Citizens). At the heart of the controversy is the requirement for those born after January 1, 2003 to prove not just their own citizenship, but also that of at least one parent. Documents like birth certificates, passports, caste certificates, land allotment letters, and even NRC records (where applicable) may be needed. This massive verification drive aims to cover Bihar’s 8 crore voters, with 78,000 BLOs (Booth Level Officers) already deployed and more appointments pending. While the NDA defends the process as transparent and essential for voter authenticity, the Opposition calls it an unconstitutional act targeting specific groups. The final voter list will be published on September 3, 2025. Critics fear genuine voters may face bureaucratic hurdles, making timely clarification and fair implementation crucial.
