Nihang attacks police with sword, hurts two
Mohali: Two cops sustained injuries after a Nihang allegedly attacked them with a sword as the police tried to nab him in a June 26 robbery case.The incident took place near Nijjher Chowk in Kharar on Saturday afternoon.
The accused, Amandeep Singh, had allegedly looted a toll tax employee of Rs 55,000 near Damtal in Himachal Pradesh on June 26 night and was hiding near the YPS chowk dharna site, where the HP had gone to nab him.
The police said he managed to give them a slip in his car along with two women but was again waylaid by cops near the Nijjher chowk with the help of the Kharar City police.
“As cops asked him to come out of the car, he attacked them with a sword, injuring constables Sukhmandar Singh and Davinder Singh. Both have been admitted to the sub-divisional hospital. There was panic in the area for around 30 minutes as the accused attacked cops with sword in broad daylight in the busy area of the Chandigarh-Kharar national highway.
The two women in the car also resisted police action during which there was a physical altercation between a cop and a woman. Police personnel cordoned off the area till the suspect was nabbed and whisked away.
A case of attempt to murder and obstructing government servant in performing his duty has been registered against the accused and the two women at the Kharar City police station.
Politicians slam cops
Meanwhile, a political slugfest erupted, with many political leaders slamming the police for “an outrageously shameful sacrilegious act". Punjab Congress president Amrinder Raja Warring posted on X, “This cop deserves to be dismissed immediately for slapping an elderly Amritdhari lady."
Kharar DSP Karan Singh Sandhu said, “The accused, who is involved in an armed robbery, was warned beforehand and asked to surrender repeatedly, but he attacked the cops with a sword. The woman was told to stay away, but she too tried to snatch the sword from a cop during which the cop pushed him away."
